BAD GUY LIST
The Bad Guy List gives descriptions of men who have attacked women living on the streets of Albuquerque.
When a woman approaches one of our volunteers and shares that she has been attacked, the first thing we ask is, “Are you okay?”
We offer to accompany her to see a nurse who specializes in helping sexual assault victims. Or if she decides otherwise, we give her over-the-counter anti-pregnancy medication, information about the Rape Crisis Center hotline and offer to check on her later.
If the victim would like to add information about the attacker to the Buy Guy List, we let her share — or not share — whatever information she chooses.
While we distribute the list widely to the public, we never provide information about a victim to any other agency, including law enforcement.
The majority of victims do not report their attacks to the police. There are several reasons for this, not the least of which is that the victims were often raped while selling sex — which remains an illegal activity. Additionally, in the past when the women did report it, there was a good chance the responding patrol officer would say they "deserved it" since they were selling sex or living on the street.
Unfortunately, if there is no complaining victim, these cases do not get investigated and no one is ever brought to justice. That means these men will continue to attack.
